I want to be upfront about something: I did not grow up a football fan. I know the basic rules, I have a vague understanding of what a penalty shootout means for everyone's blood pressure, and until about three weeks ago my knowledge of the World Cup was limited to knowing that Shakira wrote an iconic song about it.
And then the 2026 World Cup arrived in North America — in cities I can actually drive to — and something shifted. My whole summer is suddenly organised around match schedules. I have opinions about group stage results. I looked up the offside rule and genuinely understood it for the first time in my adult life. I am a changed person and I am not remotely sorry about it.
